“Practitioner, I heard that cupping can eliminate dampness. I think I have a lot of dampness in my body. Because I feel tired and don’t get enough sleep every day. Do I need to do cupping every day?”
“Practitioner, I want to do the cupping. Can I do it for half an hour?”
These are some patients often ask us.

Although cupping is one of the treatments of traditional Chinese medicine, it has certain benefits for our body, but cupping cannot be done every day!Especially the same area cannot be cupped repeatedly for every day. It is best to wait until the marking has completely subsided before doing the next treatment.
Cupping every day may cause repeated stretching of muscles, resulting in muscle relaxation and long-term damage. Furthermore, cupping will cause the rupture of capillaries, and local pores will enlarge, which can easily lead to the invasion of wind, dampness and cold. Cupping may also increase the chance of skin infection; cupping is not recommended for people with weak constitutions to do every day because it will easily cause insufficient of Yang-Qi and destroy the body’s own balance; cupping is not recommended for women during menstruation or pregnancy.
The main functions of cupping:
- Relieving rigidity of muscles and activating collaterals
- Enhance Qi for activating blood circulation
- Dispelling cold and detoxify
- Relieve pain

How long is the best interval time to do cupping?
Once a week is appropriate.
Cupping can relieve rigidity of muscles and activate collaterals or dispelling cold and detoxify, but it is not suitable to do every day, as it will deplete the essence and increase the risk of skin infection.
Therefore, it is generally recommended to do cupping at most once a week. If the skin lesions are severe, there are blisters, or the bruises have not subsided, you should wait until the marking completely subside before doing the next treatment of cupping.
How long should the cupping leave on the body?
Generally, the time of leaving is 10-15 minutes, because if the time of leaving is too long, too much pressure will cause blisters and may also lead to skin infection; but if the time is too short, the effect of relieving rigidity of muscles and activating collaterals will not be achieved.

Can shower after cupping?
Do not take a bath immediately after cupping, especially a cold bath. Generally, if there is no skin lesion, you can take a shower 3-4 hours after cupping.
However, if the skin is damaged after cupping, it is not recommended to take a shower that day, but you can wipe your body and do not touch the damaged area with water.

The color of mark after cupping can represent the physical condition:
- Reddish or pink mark: Normal, good blood circulation.
- Blisters appear on the mark: The body is heavy with dampness. If there is blood in the blisters, mean that there is dampness-heat inside the body.
- Grayish-white mark: Mostly caused by cold or dampness, and insufficient Qi and blood in the body.
- Rashes or slight itching on the mark: There is wind or the body is weak and insufficient Qi and blood.
- Bright red mark: Qi and blood deficiency or Yin deficiency and excessive-fire.
- Dark red mark: It may be due to hyperlipidemia or heat.
- Dark purple mark: It may be due to insufficient blood supply to the body or poor blood flow.

Summary:
Although cupping has certain benefits to the body, but it is not recommended everyone blindly follow the trend to do cupping every day. All things should be done in moderation and scientific to achieve the effects what we want.
