Main problem:
Physical fatigue for two weeks

A new female patient in her 30s presented to me last week, complaining of fatigue and exhaustion for two weeks.

I noticed her face was a little pale when she entered the consultation room, and her tone of voice was also a little weak. I asked for her hands to take her pulse, only to discover that her pulse was deep and wiry, her limbs felt cold, and having a look at her tongue, the tongue was pale red with white coating, basically it could be judged that the spleen and stomach were weak, and I asked her if she had bloating after meals, difficulty in digestion after eating, hiccups, etc. She agreed to them one by one, claiming that she had a bad digestive problem and that she would limit the amount of food she ate. It’s not because she eats less or isn’t hungry, but because she’s afraid that eating too much will make her stomach uncomfortable and disrupt her day. In addition to gastrointestinal issues, she is bothered by the fact that her menstrual period has yet to arrive, and the slight watery stool she has discharged is accompanied by the sensation of incomplete stool evacuation.

After learning about her symptoms, I informed her that her weakened spleen and stomach were the root of her problems. She did, indeed, listen to it and inquired about the connection between exhaustion, spleen, and stomach. What do fatigue and the spleen and stomach have in common?

【Pathological analysis】

In Traditional Chinese medicine, the spleen and stomach functions include the entire digestive system, a portion of the metabolic system, and blood system functions related to bleeding. The spleen is in charge of transformation and transportation, while the stomach is in charge of food reception. Both of these functions rely on the spleen and stomach’s Yang Qi to function properly.

The digestive system’s weakness can cause digestion and absorption problems, resulting in postprandial bloating and indigestion, loose stool, and incomplete stool evacuation; Qi and blood deficiency can cause fatigue, exhaustion, cold feet and hands, and amenorrhea in women. The presence of a slightly red tongue with a thick and greasy coating indicates poor digestive health, while a deep, thready pulse in both hands indicates Qi and blood deficiency.

【Suggestion for healthy digestion】

To maintain a healthy digestive system, we must first understand that the spleen and stomach have three fears: the first is overeating, the second is raw and cold food, and the third is greasy food. To have a good digestive system, do the following:

  1. 1. Eat regularly, without starving or overeating
  2. 2. Reduce your intake of raw and cold foods.
  3. 3. Reduce your intake of fatty and oily foods.

【Follow up consultation】

Follow-up consultation on May 11, 2022.

The patient appeared to be in better spirits after receiving one dose of Chinese medicine and acupuncture treatment, her face was rosier, and her voice was louder.

She felt her appetite and food intake had improved after she finished the medicine; even if she ate too much, she did not experience bloating or indigestible feelings, and her menstruation occurred on time yesterday; she felt her health had greatly improved, as has her work efficiency. Both of her pulses are strong, thready, and the white and greasy coating on her tongue has improved, making it slightly reddish with a thin white coating. So, I gave her Chinese medicine again and advised her to watch her diet, exercise in moderation, and limit her intake of cold foods. After the patient had finished the second dose of Chinese medicine, she Whatsapped to say that she was feeling much better and that she didn’t need to make another appointment.

【Afterword

Recently, I met several patients who were only half-convinced about the efficacy of Chinese medicine and believed that it required a long period of conditioning to be effective; however, as long as the right medicine was prescribed, Chinese medicine could also have an immediate effect. Of course, in addition to receiving treatment, patients must modify bad habits in order for the body to recover health in the short term.
