What is Kidney Deficiency? Here we must first clarify a concept, there is a difference between the kidney in Traditional Chinese Medicine and the kidney in modern medicine. In modern medicine, the kidney is a single organ that refers to the kidney, it has the functions of excreting metabolic wastes, regulating water and electrolytes, maintaining the stability of the body environment and endocrine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the kidney can be regarded as a general term composed of various functions, a system similar to that of modern medicine, of course it consists of functions of various systems such as reproductive system, urinary system, endocrine system, etc. Therefore, we cannot simply equate the kidney of modern medicine with the kidney of traditional Chinese medicine.

In the diagnosis of TCM, kidney deficiency is mainly divided into kidney Yang deficiency and kidney Yin deficiency, kidney Qi deficiency, and kidney Essence deficiency, etc. In order to know the specific symptoms, we must first understand the physiological functions and characteristics of the kidneys.
The kidney has the function of sealing and storing the essence of the human body. The kidney stores the essence and creates the necessary conditions for the essence to fully exert its physiological function in the body, at the same time, it has the function of fixing the absorption, which can prevent the excessive excretion and loss of essence, qi, blood and body fluid, and the more full the essence and qi of the kidney, the more vigorous the vitality of the person. If the kidney’s storage and fixation function is abnormal , manifested as male nocturnal emission, premature ejaculation, excessive leucorrhea in women, habitual abortion, , or manifested as enuresis, urinary incontinence, uncontrollable stool slippage, more breathing and less breathing, and other pathological changes such as asthma.
When kidney Yang is deficient, manifested as male impotence, premature ejaculation , female uterine cold infertility, or low back pain, chills, cold limbs, clear urine , complexion pale, weak pulse, etc. When kidney Yin is deficient, manifested as male nocturnal emission, slippery sperm, women’s Yin blood deficiency causes insufficient menstrual blood source, resulting in low menstrual flow in women, amenorrhea or metrorrhagia, or soreness in the waist and knees, hot flashes and night sweats, yellow urine, and other pathological changes such as dry stool.
The kidney has the physiological function of hosting and regulating the metabolism of water and fluid in the human body, if the function of kidney regulation is abnormal, the human body usually has symptoms such as oliguria, no urine, swelling of the limbs, or frequent urination, and more urination.
TCM believes that the kidney is the storage of essence, the essence is the marrow, and the marrow is divided into three parts: the marrow, the spinal cord, and the brain marrow. The bone marrow is hidden in the bones of the whole body and plays the role of nourishing the bones. The bone marrow gathers into the spinal cord and finally into the brain marrow. Bone marrow, spinal cord, and brain marrow are the essence of the human body, which are transformed by the kidney essence, so the nutrition of the brain comes from the kidney essence. If the kidney essence is insufficient, the waist and knees will be weak, osteoporosis, bone spurs, fractures, slowed thinking, lack of energy, memory loss, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, symptoms such as amnesia or dementia.
